The Sun Valley Center for the Arts is presenting a free concert and exhibition as part of the first Sun Valley Nordic Festival. Both events will be held on the site of The Center’s future home, across from the Ketchum post office at Second Avenue and Fourth Street.
On Thursday, February 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, enjoy danceable world pop from Sol’Jibe, a high-energy five-man band that draws its inspiration from travels to Spain, Cuba and Central America, among other influences. Combining flamenco, jazz and rock, this audience favorite from the Reno/Tahoe area is quickly gaining fans around the country after the release of its fourth album and recent tour.
Starting Tuesday, February 2, passersby will be able to view an installation by Jan Cox called Climate/Control, which will consist of a bonfire structure made out of cast logs of ice. The installation will be up through Monday, February 15. Cox, who participated in The Center’s Container Show on the same site this past summer, is a local artist with a keen interest in site-specific art; this winter, she is also curating a temporary installation of ephemeral artwork by five artists near her home south of Bellevue, Idaho.
In addition to the music and art, the evening will feature friendly Nordic races, a snowshoe dance competition, a bonfire and warm refreshments available for the whole family, including chili & hot cocoa provided by Galena Lodge, beer and wine from The Center. Walk from town or slap on your skis and a headlamp and cruise down the groomed Wood River Trail to The Center’s lot in Ketchum!
The weeklong Nordic Festival, which runs January 30–February 7, is being presented a consortium of many valley non-profits and businesses including the Ketchum / Sun Valley Chamber and the Blaine County Recreation District. For more information about festival events, visit www.svnordicfestival.com.
