A Mid-winter Jazz Night with singer Catherine Russell

Ketchum, ID – Right this way, your table’s waiting—at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ Mid-winter Jazz Evening on Saturday, February 20.

For one night only, the NexStage Theatre will be transformed into a stylish urban jazz club with reserved table seating and bubbly, beer or wine by the bottle. Pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass and get ready for the soulful stylings of Catherine Russell, one of the most versatile singers anywhere.

Russell is that rarest of entities—a genuine jazz and blues singer who can sing virtually anything. She launches fearlessly into each tune, getting inside the melody and capturing every emotion. Whether she’s shimmying through a barrelhouse stomper, channeling fifties R & B, dragging her weary heart through a torchy juke joint number, or kicking up her heels honky tonk style, Russell can withstand comparison to her greatest forebears.

A native New Yorker with an enviable musical pedigree (her father was Louis Armstrong’s musical director and her mother was an accomplished bassist and vocalist with advanced degrees from Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music), Russell has created a name for herself touring the world performing and recording with Paul Simon, David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne and Rosanne Cash, among others, and she’s been a hit at major events like the Chicago Blues Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival and at venues including the Kennedy Center and the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Since the 2006 release of her debut album, Cat, she has been making fans and garnering enviable reviews—the Village Voice called her “incredibly talented and classy” and Nat Hentoff wrote in the Wall Street Journal that “it’s a delight to hear the real thing in Catherine Russell.” Her second album, Sentimental Streak, was released to international acclaim in 2008 and earned her a string of appearances on radio and television.

The Mid-winter Cabaret with Catherine Russell takes place on Saturday, February 20, at 7:30 pm at Ketchum’s NexStage Theatre. Tickets are sold by the table (tables of 2 or 4) or

individually. Individual tickets are $38 and include a ticket for one drink. A table for two is $75 (includes a bottle of wine or champagne) and a table for four is $150 (includes two bottles of wine or champagne). Food and drink (including beer and water) will be for sale to all patrons. Purchase tickets online at www.sunvalleycenter.org or call 726.9491 ex 10 or stop by The Center in Ketchum.

Please note that the Catherine Russell jazz night is not included as part of The Center’s Winter 2009–2010 Winter Performing Arts Series.
