Living in a Wired World: Can Personal Privacy Survive in the 21st Century?

Frederick Lane

by Britt Udesen, Director of Education & Humanities, 208.726.9491 ex 19

Is there personal privacy in the age of the internet, cell phones and security cameras? Can Tiger Woods hide cell phone calls? Can Governor Mark Sanford go on a “hiking trip” without the public finding out about it? Author, attorney and privacy expert Frederick Lane will be in Sun Valley on Wednesday, March 10 to talk about privacy in the 21st century and sign copies of his new book, American Privacy: The 400-Year-History of Our Most Contested Right.

Lane’s lecture at the NexStage Theatre is part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ multidisciplinary project I Spy: Surveillance and Security, which takes an-depth look at government and corporate “spying” and how to balance civil rights against our need for security.

In his talk, Lane will discuss how we reveal ourselves online—either knowingly or not. “Social networking sites and mobile devices offer us unprecedented opportunities to stay in touch with family and friends, publicize ourselves and form new communities almost instantaneously,” he says. “At the same time, however, we are revealing tremendous amounts of information about our personal lives, with little thought about how such information can be used or misused. Our challenge is to adapt our laws and our personal behaviors to these new technologies."

Lane is the author of five books and a frequent guest on national radio and television programs including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He has lectured at universities and organizations across the country on topics such as technology and privacy, online harassment and discrimination, “sexting” and how copyright and plagiarism laws apply to electronic communications.

In addition to his writing and public speaking, Lane is a computer forensics expert and frequently provides consultation and expert witness services in civil and criminal cases. A graduate of Amherst College and Boston College Law School, he lives in Burlington, Vermont, with his family.

The lecture will be held at 7 pm Wednesday, March 10, at the NexStage Theatre in Ketchum. Books for signing will be on sale at the lecture or can be purchased ahead of time at local booksellers. Tickets are $10 for Sun Valley Center for the Arts members and $15 for nonmembers. To purchase tickets, visit www.sunvalleycenter.org, call 208.726.9491 ex 10 or stop by The Center in Ketchum. Please note that this lecture is not part of The Center’s 2009–2010 Lecture Series.

In addition to Lane’s talk, I Spy: Surveillance and Security includes a visual arts exhibition at The Center, Ketchum, a lecture on April 1 by former Secretary of the Navy John Lehman and a free Family Day on April 24.
