Community Invited to View and Comment
The Hunger Coalition is excited to share the draft design concept for our Hailey-based garden with the community on April 6, 2010. The garden and native landscaped park, located next to the Old County Courthouse, will be a beautiful community asset providing healthy produce to the hungry in Blaine County and offering volunteer, empowerment, and educational opportunities for our entire community. This project is a response to the Blaine County Commissioners’ need for finding a positive and productive use for the now-vacant land which once housed the County jail.
With assistance from Native Landscapes, a local landscape design firm, ideas and suggestions brought forth in small group design meetings were translated into several comprehensive design concepts. With input from The Hunger Coalition regarding projected uses and needs, elements from the different designs compose a draft being presented at the Tuesday evening meeting. Specifics for garden design and use include producing fresh, healthy produce for the hungry in our community, conducting educational workshops on growing your own produce, incorporating native plants and water-wise gardening practices in your yard, and providing volunteer opportunities for the community.
Key design elements include individual garden beds dedicated to produce production, native landscaping beds with educational signage, home garden demonstration beds, a small fruit orchard, compost bins, ADA accessible pathways, and more. Hunger Coalition Board President Brooke Bonner says, “We are excited to develop this asset for the community which will provide the hungry with an opportunity to participate in the production of their own food and give people the opportunity to work side by side while learning and giving back.”
The community, including those experienced in gardening and native landscaping, is invited to view the draft design concept and make comments and suggestions on Tuesday, April 6, from 6-7:30 pm at The Hunger Coalition Food Bank, 121 Honeysuckle in Bellevue (in the industrial center on the south end of town).
