SVFSC Holds Annual Awards Ceremony and "Spring Fling" Skate Party

Sun Valley Figured Skating Club's top 2010 volunteers.

On Sunday, April 24, the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club held its Annual Awards Ceremony and a “Spring Fling” party to celebrate another busy, successful skating year. The event began with some great exhibition skating, and then the club opened the ice to free skating for members and their friends and family. Club president Joan Lamb, and Awards Committee Member Barb Richardson, presided.

Every year, SVFSC gives four Special Awards to its most outstanding skaters and volunteers.  The awards are based on the specified criteria during the time period of April 19, 2009 to April 10, 2010. The Sportsmanship Awards are based on the number of volunteer hours the skater devotes to club activities and events, as well as a positive attitude towards the club and fellow skaters. The Athletic Achievement Awards are based on athletic accomplishments during the year. The awards committee reviews and weighs each skaters’ athletic accomplishments in Freeskate, Pairs and Ice Dancing. Emphasis is placed on participation and placement in higher level competitions such as Regionals, Sectionals, Jr. Nationals and Nationals, passing USFS Gold tests, passing USFS Freeskate tests, winning special awards, and, to a lesser extent, the number of club competitions attended and the skater’s placement in those.

The 2010 SVFSC Special Award winners are:

 JUVENILE - SENIOR LEVEL AWARDS

The Judy Fuller Sportsmanship Award was awarded to Julia Broderick and Alexandra Harten, who tied with 59.5 hours of service to the club each! Julia and Alex always demonstrate good cheer and good sportsmanship, and they are good role models for the younger skaters. Their names will be added to a permanent plaque to reside at the rink.

The Herman Maricich Achievement Award was presented to Shayna Moellenburg. Shayna honored SVFSC by winning the Silver Medal in Novice Ladies Freeskate at the Regional Championships, thereby qualifying for competition at Sectionals. Shayna became the first SVFSC Ladies Freeskater to go to the Sectional Championships in many years!

The following skaters received Honorable Mention for Juvenile-Senior Level Athletic Achievement:  Nicole Pratt, for passing her USFS Gold Freeskate test in Moves in the Field; Alexandra Harten, for winning the Bronze Medal in Pre-Juvenile Freeskate at the Regional Championships Nonqualifying Competition; and Telar McClure, for passing her USFS Intermediate Freeskate test.

NONTEST – PRE-JUVENILE LEVEL AWARDS

The Daisy Langley Junior Sportsmanship Award was presented to Caitlin Scholtis. Caitlin recently tested into Juvenile Freeskate, but she logged most of her 25 hours of service to the club at the Pre-Juvenile level. Caitlin is also a good sportsmanship role model at the rink.

The Lolly Jensen Junior Achievement Award went to Abby Chase. Abby’s devotion to skating motivated her to pass several Ice Dancing and Moves in the Field tests, and she was the only SVFSC skater to compete in a National level competition this year.  Abby competed in Juvenile Level Ice Dancing at the Jr. National Championships with former partner Alex Sullivan.

The following skaters received Honorable Mention for Nontest – Pre-JuvenileSportsmanship: Kenny Pratt, who  logged 25 hours of service to the club at the Basic Skills level.

Congratulations Everyone!
