Wood River Homecoming Bar B Que, September 17, 2010 5:30pm

The 2010 Wood River High School Homecoming Bar B Que will have a new twist: supporting local growers and restaurants.  The annual picnic will this year have a number of food booths from which football fans and the community can purchase locally grown corn on the cob and watermelon.  In addition, Powerhouse Restaurant and Bike Shop will be serving their organic burgers on Big Wood Bread challah buns, along with hot dogs and homemade potato chips. Grilled Lava Lake Lamb will be served in warmed pita bread.  Money Farms pies, Toni’s ice cream  and hand made cookies round out the delicious offerings.  However, the most popular items may be BuckSnort Root beer and floats: the root beer is hand made in Bellevue.

Organizer Lili Simpson says “My high school homecoming featured a street lined with food and other booths, and was a big hit with the community.  I thought that this idea might help to support our restaurants in the current economy, and I love supporting local growers, too.  Powerhouse employs a number of our seniors, and they wanted to help out the kids”. Wood River’s annual Bar B Que is a senior class fundraiser. “ In my mind, this is a great opportunity for a future  fall festival, featuring lots of local food and restaurants,  sort of  “The Best of the Valley” crossed with the farmer’s markets.”  Tickets will be sold in $1 denomination, so that patrons can use tickets to buy by the item and sample all of their favorites.

The Wood River Homecoming Bar B Que will have a bulletin board (and Facebook page) with photos of current and past homecoming royalty, and will feature any “royals” from any high school in the country who now live in the Wood River Valley.  “We thought it would be fun to involve the community by posting photos of royalty from anywhere”, says Simpson .  “Eventually I’d like to have people from many homecoming courts in our Homecoming parade”  For this year, photos of your homcoming experience may be sent to PO Box 3508, Hailey, or emailed to wrhomecoming@gmail.com.
