Community members of all ages have been in rehearsal for St. Thomas Playhouse's Family Main Stage production of Oliver!, the world famous musical originally mounted in the West End of London in the early 1960's. It is based on the novel by Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist, and was adapted for the stage by Lionel Hart (book, lyrics, and music).

The show opens in a squalid orphanage in Victorian London where a small boy, Oliver, has the audacity to ask for more food. He is promptly considered unfit to remain, and is sold on the street to an undertaker and his wife. Oliver escapes the funeral parlor only to make the acquaintance of the savvy Artful Dodger who takes him to the Thieves Kitchen, home to a group of street-smart boys under the leadership of the wily, conniving Fagin. Oliver becomes a part of their petty-criminal world by learning how to pickpocket. He meets the warm and earthy Nancy who is also part of this underworld; she is in love with the evil criminal, Bill Sykes. The plot quickly thickens between good and evil, with Oliver eventually finding the loving home of his dreams.

The musical is suited for all ages, and children are encouraged to attend with their families to experience the joy of live theater. The run is Thursday, October 14-Sunday October 17. Curtain is 7:00pm, doors open around 6:45pm. In addition, there will be a 2:00pm matinee on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are $20 adults/$10 children. On Friday, October 15, the performance will strictly be a Gala Benefit for the H. Edward Bilkey Memorial Scholarship Fund. Patrons will be served an array of delightful English fare, wine, beer, and champagne. Dessert will be served at Intermission. Tickets are $50 (reserved seating), $30 general side seating, $10 children.

For tickets call 726-5349, ext. 15, or at Iconoclast Books and St. Thomas Church on Sun Valley Road.
