On Tuesday February 15, 2011 the Idaho House of Representatives State Affairs Committee agreed to send to the House floor a proclamation, introduced by Representative Wendy Jaquet from District 25, to honor the Sun Valley Resort for their 75th anniversary, Mr. Earl Holding for his contribution and building of Sun Valley as well as his induction into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, and Muffy Davis a great Paralympic skier for her induction into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.
Under the employment of Averell Harriman, Sun Valley was located by Count Felix Schaffgotsch when he set out in search of the perfect spot for the grand American resort. On December 21, 1936 Sun Valley officially opened its doors to the public and we now commemorate the 75th birthday by declaring the 21st of December Sun Valley Day. On April 2nd we are given a unique opportunity to host the induction of Mr. Holding and Ms. Davis into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame for their individual outstanding achievements and contributions to the Sun Valley community. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of fame honors only the most renowned and influential members of the ski and snowboard community.
After coming across the listing for the Sun Valley lodge in the Wall Street Journal, Mr. Holding purchased the property and changed Idaho's landscape into one of the foremost respected and loved ski resorts in the U.S. At an early age of twelve Mr. Holding first expressed interest in business and hospitality when he earned a mere fifteen cents an hour to keep the grounds clean at a Salt Lake City apartment complex. He went on to build Sinclair Oil and The Little America Corporation. Sun Valley s the crown jewel of his work with four beautiful lodges, snow making, a gondola, high speed quads, sizable summer business and an expanded golf course.
Muffy Davis was a top junior racer who competed closely with downhill champion Picabo Street. An unfortunate ski accident in 1989 crushed her spine and Muffy became paraplegic. This dramatically changed her life and shattered her chances of becoming a champion ski racer. Despite Muffy's disability, she continues to race and has won more than 25 World Cup titles, two overall World Cup victories and four Paralympic Medals. Today Muffy is an inspirational speaker who encourages the aspirations of those restricted by their physical disabilities.
This Proclamation is expected to reach the House floor by Thursday, February 17, 2011 or Friday, February 18, 2011. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame is traditionally held in Ishpeming, Michigan and therefore it is an honor for Idaho to play host to this monumental event and should this Proclamation pass we ask you to join us on April 2nd 2011 to celebrate the inductions Sun Valley.
