Educational Workshops Focus on Healthier Foods, and Finances

Save Money, Eat Better, and Improve Your Household Budget with Educational Workshop Series Presented by The Hunger Coalition.

The Hunger Coalition embarks on a new series of classes and workshops designed to help you save money, eat better, and stretch your household budget, starting Monday, February 28 with "Meal Planning on a Budget" from 3 - 4:15pm at La Alianza Classroom at The Community Campus in Hailey.  Each class introduces simple ideas and techniques on every day subjects like smart shopping, living on a budget, and cooking with healthier foods.  Free and open to the public, these workshops focus on money-saving ways to improve your family’s physical and financial health.

Promoting solutions to the underlying causes of hunger is an integral part of The Hunger Coalition’s mission.  From empowerment services and volunteer opportunities to providing access to community resources, The Hunger Coalition actively assists in a clients’ transition out of food insecurity into a place of greater self-sufficiency.  These new Educational Workshops are designed to empower clients, and community members, alike.

Everyone in our community could benefit from learning how to use coupons or grow a small number of fresh herbs or vegetables.  The economic challenges of the last few years have resulted in income loss, prolonged unemployment, and the imposition of unwelcome lifestyle changes for many.  In 2010, the Hunger Coalition enrolled more than 200 new clients in its food assistance program for at least one week.  This new program endeavors to help all community members learn ways to enjoy a better, healthier lifestyle while remaining very frugal.

The first Workshop, “Meal Planning on a Budget” offers tips on creating a low budget grocery list based on a 5-day meal plan, shares secrets about coupon clipping, and suggests new dishes for feeding that hungry family with limited ingredients.  Held at the La Alianza Classroom at The Community Campus in Hailey, this inaugural class runs from 3 – 4;15pm on Monday, February 28.  Looking ahead, the “Creative Leftovers” workshop takes place on Tuesday, March 29

th from 5:30 – 7pm at the St. Charles Souper Supper Kitchen in Hailey.   Watch for information on upcoming workshops in April and May.  Specific dates, times and locations to be announced.

Whether you want to plant vegetables, put your family on a budget or increase your collection of recipes, all community members are invited to attend.  Call Hallie Reikowsky at 788-0121 to reserve your space now, as space is limited!

The Hunger Coalition strives to end hunger in our community by providing wholesome food to those in need and by promoting solutions to the underlying causes of hunger through collaboration, education and advocacy. For more information, visit www.thehungercoalition.org.
