Free Rabies Vaccinations from the Animal Shelter

The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley is offering the second and final rabies vaccination clinic to the community. By appointment only on Saturday, February 26th from 9-11 am, Blaine County residents can get their dogs vaccinated. The vaccination is free with the purchase of a 2011 dog license. Rabies vaccinations are required by law for all dogs and are a prerequisite to be able to get dogs licensed.

In addition to being required by law, rabies vaccinations are an important part of keeping you pets healthy and your family safe. With recent local news coverage of potentially infected bats biting residents, there is a possibility that our pets are at risk of exposure. It is only through the active vaccination programs in the United States that we’ve been able to almost eliminate the number of human infections. However, around the world, rabies kills over 55,000 people annually, according to the World Health Organization. Pet owners can help keep the risk low in our country by keeping their animals’ vaccinations current.

All dogs over 6 months of age are required by Blaine County ordinance to be licensed every year. Do your part to help and make sure your dog is a “Legal Beagle”! Dog licenses are available from the Animal Shelter, Sawtooth Animal Center, Sun Valley Animal Center, St. Francis Pet Clinic, Ketchum Police Department, and the Sun Valley Police Department.

If you would like to take advantage of the Shelter’s rabies clinic, call to make an appointment: (208) 788-4351.

About Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley

The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, the first “no kill” shelter in Idaho, promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless animals, adopting them to qualified homes and reducing animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. More than 90 percent of its funding comes from private donations.

In 2010 more than 1500 animals received services from the shelter. This includes 363 animals that were adopted, 257 lost animals that were reunited with their owners, 247 shelter animals that were spayed/neutered, and 363 privately owned animals that were spayed or neutered at no cost to their owners. On an average day, the shelter cares for 35 dogs and 31 cats.
