Eighteen local figure skaters competed for the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club in Jackson, Wyoming, March 10 through 12, returning with thirty three medals, four Special Awards and the “Most Outstanding Club at the 2011 Jackson Hole Invitational” trophy. Sixteen year old Nicole Pratt, a Wood River High tenth grader, won the Sherrie Fleuter Award for excellence in both artistic and freestyle skating and for representing the spirit of figure skating at the Jackson Hole Invitational. Pratt is coached and her programs choreographed by Darlin Baker. 11 year old Lane Letourneau, a Community School sixth grader, won the Stillwell Award for skating the most highly entertaining and creative showcase program. Letourneau is coached by Holly Wheeler, with her programs choreographed by Gia Guddat. Pratt also captured the Novice Ladies First Place Combined Free Skate trophy, and Joyce Chan, a Community School eighth grader, won the Intermediate Ladies First Place Combined Free Skate trophy. Chan is coached by Sonya Dunfield, with choreography by Guddat. Coaches Baker, Wheeler, Dunsfield, and Guddat accompanied the SVFSC team to competition. The competition concluded with an event the Jackson Hole host club designed purely for entertainment, “Gong Showcase,” in which single and pairs of skaters skate zany comedy programs before costumed judges who send them packing by banging a large Gong. Alexandra Harten and Joyce Chan proudly captured First Place in “Medium Pairs Gong” with “Beware of the Blob.” Competing in “Low Gong Showcase,” Lane Letourneau and Emma Stuessi won Second Place with “Pants on the Ground/Whip Your Hair Around,” and Blake Letourneau and Alex Stuessi placed fourth with “Black Swan/White Swan.”
The Jackson Hole Figure Skating Club hosted a USFS test session preceding the competition. Sun Valley skaters Travis Flynt and Sheldon Gentling attended. Flynt passed both his Preliminary and Pre Juvenile Free Skate tests, which qualifies him to compete at the Pre Juvenile level. Gentling passed her Juvenile Moves in the Field test, the fourth of eight tests in the series.
