The 34th Annual Northern Rockies Folk Festival will be held 5-10 p.m. Friday Aug. 5, and Noon-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 at Hop Porter Park, in Hailey. The family friendly two-day event is one of the highlights of the Wood River Valley summer, drawing some five- to six-thousand music lovers from all over Idaho and from out of state.
Founded in 1977 by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, it has been its own entity since 1995. It is now managed by a nine-member volunteer board, and has some 40 volunteers on hand each year to handle gates, tickets, tee-shirt sales, clean up and security.
This year the headliners include the popular singer-songwriter James McMurtry and rockin’ band, The Gourds, both of whom hail from Austin, Texas.
There will be raffles for the bi-annual Friendship Quilt made especially for the Northern Rockies Folk Festival, and a White Otter rafting trip. Also, there will be several food and desert vendors onsite along with Sun Valley Brewery, which will offer beer and wine to festival-goers.
People may also bring picnics into the park, though not dogs, or bikes. Active military personnel will be admitted free. And for the first time there will be overnight camping available across the street from the venue in Lions Park, with no reservations on a first come, first served basis. Recycling will be coordinated by the Environmental Resource Center, and Site Based Energy’s mobile solar energy unit will supply energy for all the food vendors.
The Folk Festival will occur at the same time as the newly minted Northern Rockies Arts & Crafts Fair in Hailey.
On Sunday, Aug. 7 there will be a Pickin’ Party beginning at Noon, open to any musician who wants to join.
Friday only wristbands are $16; Saturday they are $21 and an all-festival pass is $32. Tickets are available at the Hailey Chamber of Commerce, Shelley’s Deli in Hailey, Chapter One in Ketchum and online at www.northernrockiesfolkfestival.com.
