BCSD Begins the New Year with Superintendent Keynote Address, Meetings, Trainings and More

Blaine County School District Superintendent Dr. Lonnie Barber delivered the annual keynote address to over 500 staff members this week. This is the only time when every staff member comes together at the beginning of the school year to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the District. After acknowledging employees for their years of service, introducing new staff members, and highlighting the accomplishments of each school, Barber spoke about the importance of the teaching profession.

He emphasized that each of the students in Blaine County School District has a success story and that teachers and staff are responsible for student success. “The work that you do, the most difficult work of anyone, is also the most important work that anyone does,” stated Barber. “Who else gets the opportunity to inspire, lead and shape the future for our children? Who else gets the opportunity to infuse hope and encourage young minds every day?”

Barber went on to talk about the successes of students in the District and how teachers and staff have impacted them. The response from staff was overwhelmingly positive. “I felt very touched and came away feeling so excited about helping students this year,” said Carey School secretary Nancy Durtschi.

Barber thanked teachers and staff for their work and ended the keynote by saying, “Now it’s time to go out and create success with each of your students. Have a great year!”

Educators and staff started the school year last week with trainings and meetings. Staff from Bellevue, Woodside and Hemingway Elementary schools attended three days of training for The Leader in Me program. This program supports Strategic Plan Goal #’s 1, 2, 4, and 5.

BCSD teachers receive training for new math textbooks and curriculum

The District adopted a new math curriculum last spring and all elementary and secondary math teachers received training for the new textbooks and curriculum. The training provided teachers with hands-on applications of the new math curriculum adoption that began two years ago. This program supports Strategic Plan Goal #’s 1, 2, and 6.

New teachers were introduced to the District’s highly recognized mentoring program, which matches experie nced teachers with new teachers to the District. Led by veteran educator Patty Scherer, the program focuses on helping new teachers access resources and acclimate to the District. Monthly and on-going meetings occur through the mentoring program. This program support Strategic Plan Goal #6: We actively recruit, retain and develop highly competent, caring, and student-focused staff.
