Royal Larkspur Players next play, RED by John Logan. Coming to NexStage Jan. 6th

Royal Larkspur Players next play, RED by John Logan.  The NY Times review of the play is printed below the "poster reproduction image"...the image was created from one of the 3 paintings I did for the play. In fact there will be 5 huge "Rothko" reproductions on stage for this study of 2 years in the career of Mark Rothko, one of the founding fathers of abstract expressionism in America.  Opinionated, egotistical and pedantic, Rothko was also a brilliant progressive force and passionate lover of art in the 1940's and 50's; noted for refusing to honor a contract with the Seagrams Building architects to provide murals for their uber-restaurant.  In a startling twist he returned the money and kept the murals.  They were donated instead to the Tate Museum of Modern Art in London where they occupy a gallery all to themselves.

"RED" was the toast of NYC in 2010 and won 6 Tonys including Best Drama and Best Actor (Alfred Molina).  The rights just became available; to my knowledge we are the first theater company in the nation outside of New York to perform it!  A penetrating look at art in the latter half of the 20th Century, it also goes on to answer complex questions about art and the relationship of the artist to his followers and the art world he lives in.  One of the memorable highlights of the play is the actual painting of a Rothko masterpiece on stage in real time!
The play will appear at the NexStage Theater January 6th and 7th at 7:30 PM.  Admission is free; all donations will go to the Sun Valley Center for the Arts which is the non-profit co-partnering with RLPT. For further information, please contact the director/producer Gary Hoffman at 725-5522
