Boise’s Like a Rocket do the alt-country genre one better by ditching the often over-hyped Old West motif. The band has dubbed its sound “Southern rocking funk and alt-country.” On “8th Ave Love Poem #1,” lead singer/guitarist Speedy Gray croons about his love for a New York girl with a bluesy tone reminiscent of Mark Knopfler. It’s the kind of song you want to learn all the lyrics to so you can belt it out while you hug the stage. A catchy drum line and guitar riff melt into an addictive tune as Gray sings, “Maybe what’s wrong with me / is what’s wrong with you?” on the opening song What’s Wrong With You. The flute accompaniment on “Every Time Sweet” might catch you off guard, but you stay with the guys because they so perfectly fill their roles. The band is akin to The Animals in its early years, with a style that’s somehow classic and modern all at once.

With blue skies, fresh powder and $35 lift tickets, thousands of local and regional skiers and snowboarders enjoyed a fantastic day on the slopes of Sun Valley Ski Resort  and a lively apres ski party and raffle at River Run Lodge as part of the new Fly Sun Valley Alliance (FSVA), SKI FOR AIR SERVICE Community Ski Day on Sunday January 22.   The proceeds from the lift ticket and raffle ticket sales raised nearly $40,000 to help support FSVA’s efforts to maintain and improve commercial air service to Sun Valley, an economic lifeline for the area’s tourism and other local businesses.

The significantly discounted $35 SKI FOR AIR SERVICE lift tickets were completely sold out in advance and there continued to be strong demand up until the end of the sales period on Saturday, January 21, so only those who got their tickets early were able to enjoy the discounted day of skiing.

It’s been said that everything musical has been done before, but Buster Blue has found a place inhabited only by their own off-­‐ -­‐kilter creation. The five members utilize an arsenal of instruments that include horns, banjo, accordion, chains, and a well-­‐ -­‐placed bucket. Their intention to revisit the American musical roots tradition may have much to do with their upbringing in the small town of Gardnerville, Nevada. Buster Blue’s musical educations range from one member being drum major of the high school band to another being a screamer in a hardcore group. Their diverse backgrounds and upbringings help give color to their music, as well as make it difficult to pigeonhole them to a specific genre.

After an upsetting loss to the Utah Grizzlies (7-1)  Friday night at our first away game of the season.  The Sun Valley Suns met at a local Utah watering hole to drink some of the local brew and hatch a plan to send these Grizzlies back into hibernation!  

After many, many pitchers of the Utah  "Super Ultra Ultra Light Beer"  The Suns, now feeling extremely  hydrated,  plotted their strategy for the next day's game.  Waking up Saturday totally refreshed,  like they each drank a gallon of water the night before, The Suns took to the ice ready to put the grizzlies back on the endangered species list.

Hamming in the game winning goal Charles Friedman made himself a nice Grizzlie skin rug and the Suns skated away with a 6-5 win!

The Sun Valley Suns would like to thank the Utah Grizzlies for a great weekend of Hockey  and look forward to the Grizzlies coming to Sun Valley this weekend Jan 20th  and 21st for a rematch.

For a comparatively brief moment in the mid-1960s, Muscle Shoals, Alabama was the unlikely epicenter of a major American songwriting renaissance. Here are some of the names: Arthur Alexander, Donnie Fritts, Eddie Hinton, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, O.C. Smith, Joe South, Tony Joe White. Toss Bobbie Gentry into that mix, on style if not geography, and the list is not complete, regardless.

Style matters, for in those turbulent times these writers and their collaborators fused the vocal passion of African-American soul and gospel to an Anglo-Saxon storytelling tradition which goes back at least to Beowulf: Tough, hard, passionate, unflinching songs, unrepentant in their sense of place and direct in their stubborn Southernness.

Finn Riggins is the result of a longtime collaboration between Cameron Bouiss, Eric Gilbert and Lisa Simpson.  Having met while completing their music degrees at the University of Idaho, the trio began playing music together in 2000, an endeavor that would ultimately culminate in what is now Finn Riggins. This week I had the opportunity to ski with the Sun Valley Adaptive Sports team.  They are training and gearing up for another busy season.  It is an amazing and dedicated crew.   Sun Valley Adaptive Sports enriches the lives of people with disabilities through sports and recreation. As a positive and visible fixture in the community, SVAS programs give children, teens, adults, and veterans with disabilities the opportunity to experience competition and the outdoors without limitations.

As a  Realtor and a Registered Forester I have some qualifications to write about buying and selling land for sale, primarily land. I have sold thousands of acres as a Realtor and managed hundreds of thousands as a Forester since 1973.

If you are considering buying rural land this article may help you with some good tips and information. The points below will give you some basic information and insight into what you need to look for as well as look out for in a land purchase.

• Kind of Land. Do you want a farm, timberland, development potential, home site, hunting, agricultural use? One tract of land can rarely be all of these. Think what you plan and seek from there. Of course most tracts will have multiple uses but sometimes there are local use restrictions to consider.
• Access. Hopefully you will have highway frontage for access. Some tracts may have only an easement. If so, look at the deeded easement layout and the width of it. A 20' wide easement to a property that you later want to develop is a major...
