The SVO Pet of the Week is Harrison. Some cats are blessed with beauty and personality. Harrison is certainly one of those cats! He is as friendly as he is handsome, but there is no ego to go along with it, making him a truly wonderful kitty! Harrison is friendly with other cats and does not seem put out by dogs. We think he would make a great family pet and we're sure he would enjoy lots of attention. Because of his long coat, Harrison will require some grooming, but he doesn't seem to mind this activity one bit. If you are looking for an all around wonderful kitty, stop by and meet Harrison! For more information on Harrison or any of the other wonderful pets awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-6444.

The Sawtooth Botanical Garden’s latest class offering will help make your Valentine’s Day special with your own homemade chocolate truffles.

Join chocolate enthusiast Joanna Carnes at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden on Thursday, February 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., for Something Sweet for your Valentine, a class on making decadent chocolates.  Ms. Carnes will guide participants through the how-to’s of creating truffles for the February 14 holiday.  Joanna is a graduate from the Grand Rapids Community College School of Culinary Arts and has worked as a pastry chef for Amway Corporation and throughout the valley.

This delicious and informal evening is a great excuse for a night out with a friend during a cold winter evening.  The Garden keeps the class size small so all participants can try their hands at turning out a truffle to be proud of. All participants will, of course, be able to sample the results at the class.

This class is $25 for members and $35 for non-... (more)

The SVO Pet of the Week is Dexter. Dexter is one cool cat. Nothing seems to bother him, and we're guessing that his years roaming neighborhoods allowed him to see it all. He came to us as a stray, but he was already neutered, indicating he at one time was someone's pet. He also had a large abscess on his side, suggesting that another cat in the neighborhood wasn't so fond of him. We think Dexter would make a great family companion. He enjoys attention, but he’s also content to watch it all from his perch. He is a large cat, but doesn't mind being handled or petted. If you like the look of a Russian Blue, come meet Dexter… he is every bit as handsome. He sure deserves a better life from here on out. Dexter is a neutered male Russian Blue/DSH mix born around December 2009. For more information about Dexter or any of the other wonderful cats and dogs available for adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call us at 788-6444.

The Egoavil family, after living in Blaine County for 20 years, will celebrate the holidays in their own home for the first time, thanks to the Habitat for Humanity Blaine County affiliate.

Jose and Edith Egoavil moved to the United States from Peru and settled in Blaine County in 1989. They wanted a small, quite community with opportunities in the construction and tourism industries.

Jose Egoavil, today an experienced carpenter, started out as an apprentice in his trade. Edith Egoavil began cleaning houses and today works for Sun Valley Company in the housekeeping department. Both also worked hard to become U.S. citizens.

The Egoavils now have three sons, Yancy, 10; Beyer, 4; and Devin 3. But they had not been able to achieve their dream of their very own home, until they heard about Habitat for Humanity through St. Luke’s Center for Community Health.

They fit the income guidelines and other qualifications required by Habitat.  The Family Selection Committee met with the family at their small apartment in Hailey... (more)

Local and International Candlelight Vigils Are Planned to Mark the 40th Anniversary of the Wild Horses Act this
Thursday, December 15, 2011

"Keep Their Light Shining" is an international candlelight vigil to honor Wild Horse Annie that will be held December 15, 2011, the 40 anniversary of the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
On that day in 1971, President Richard Nixon signed the landmark legislation into law, stating that:

“Wild horses and burros merit man’s protection historically for they are a living link with the days of the conquistadors, through the heroic times of the western Indians and pioneers, to our own day when the tonic of wilderness seems all too scarce. More than that, they merit it as a matter of ecological right – as anyone knows who has ever stood awed at the indomitable spirit and sheer energy of a mustang running free.”

The Idaho-Sun Valley organization has decided to have a bonfire ( and other things )  instead of candles. The event will be held this Thursday, December 15, 201...(more)

Have you started making your New Year’s resolutions?

Equally important is figuring out what will motivate you to keep the resolutions, points out Connie Love, a certified life coach. And remember, she reminds her clients, that it’s all right to start keeping resolutions now instead of waiting until Jan. 1.

Here are some of Love’s suggestions:

  1. Break goals into small parts.
  2. Make it as easy as possible to succeed. If your goal is to exercise more, lay out the appropriate clothes before you go to bed. If you want to go on a diet, plan menus and shop appropriately.
  3. Remember that success breeds success. When you achieve small steps, you have more occasions to celebrate.
  4. Reward small steps. Just be sure that your “reward” is not undermining your efforts. Don’t celebrate losing 5 pounds, for example, by going out to dinner. Buy yourself a new pair of slacks instead.
  5. Recognize that there may be setbacks. Consider what might cause a setback and how you are going to get back on track if one occurs.
  6. Realize that we all can...
