About Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley
The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, the first “no kill” shelter in Idaho, promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless animals, adopting them to qualified homes and reducing animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. More than 90 percent of its funding comes from private donations.
In 2010 more than 1500 animals received services from the shelter. This includes 388 animals that were adopted, 257 lost animals that were reunited with their owners, 247 shelter animals that were spayed/neutered, and 363 privately owned animals that were spayed or neutered at no cost to their owners, and over 6000 pounds of food distributed through our Paws for Hunger partnership with The Hunger Coalition. On an average day, the shelter cares for 35 dogs and 31 cats.

Don't miss the final performances of Company of Fools' production of MOONLIGHT & MAGNOLIAS, onstage at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey through Friday, December 31.
1939 Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, Gone with the Wind, a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's novel. The screenplay, you see, just doesn't work. While fending off the film's stars and gossip columnists, Selznick sends a car for famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and pulls director Victor Fleming from the set of The Wizard of Oz. Summoning both to his office, he locks the doors and the three men labor over five days to fashion a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time. Company of Fools’ production, under the direction is directed by Gordon Reinhart and features Andrew Alburger, Scott Creighton, Ed Kershen and Christine Leslie.
Showtimes are as follows:
- Thursday, December 23 at 7:00 pm
- Friday, December 24 at 3:00 pm
- Sunday, December 26 at 3:00 pm
- Monday, December 27 at 7:00 pm
- Tuesday, December 28 at 7:00 pm
- Wednesday, December 29 at 7:00 pm
- Thursday, December 30 at 7:00 pm
- Friday, December 31 at 3:00 pm
Tickets are $28 for adults, $20 for seniors (62 and over), and $10 for students (18 and under). $20 tickets are available to members of groups of 6 or more. Call the Liberty Theatre box office at 208-578-9122 to purchase tickets or visit www.companyoffools.org for complete information.

Robert W. Bartlett II, 76, retired attorney and newspaper reporter, died Tuesday at his home in Hailey after a two-year battle with cancer.
A Wood River Valley resident for 25 years, he was best known for his twin passions: a commitment to the environment and a commitment to helping the “little guy” find his way through the legal system.
“Bob cared passionately about the kind of world that he would be leaving to his grandnieces and grandnephews. He was a donor to environmental organizations. He spoke tirelessly with conservation leaders and offered his opinions and suggestions for direction,” said state Rep. Wendy Jaquet.
“As an attorney, Bob was well known in the vulnerable communities as a ‘go-to guy’ whenever someone needed help,” she added. He worked at reduced fees for dozens of people who otherwise could not have afforded legal help.
A lifelong bachelor, he liked having his friends around. When he moved to Idaho from San Francisco, he first lived in a condo carefully selected for its location within walking distance of Sun Valley’s River Run ski lift. “If I had an extra bedroom by the lift, I knew I would have as much company as I wanted,” he said.
Ketchum resident Jo Murray was one of those frequent visitors in the 80s and 90s. “Bob worked with my husband at the San Francisco Chronicle,” she said. “After my husband died, Bob knew I needed an escape during the holidays. He wrote me a note saying, ‘My house is your house’ I spent three Christmases as his houseguest until I got my own place. I doubt that I would have moved here otherwise.”
He made a point of keeping in touch with old friends. He went to Yale reunions whenever possible. When Pulitzer Prize winner and historical author David McCullough signed books in Ketchum, it was Mr. Bartlett who introduced him.
Mr. Bartlett devoted hours to reading and keeping up with current events. He was never shy with his opinions. “He loved a good argument,” said longtime friend Marge Slotten of Twin Falls. “I think that is why he enjoyed the law so much.”
In the weeks before his death, he often told friends that he should have paid more attention to his health. He said it without bitterness; it was just fact. He specifically asked that his obituary include one statement: He hoped his death would persuade others to have regular colon examinations and other preventive medical care when their doctors advise it.
Mr. Bartlett was born in Atlantic City, N.J., on Sept. 8, 1933. He was a graduate of Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., in 1951; Yale College in 1955 and the University of California Hastings College of the Law in 1966.
After college, he worked as a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times before joining the U.S. Army, serving in counter-intelligence in Germany. The Army was a necessity to fulfill his military obligation but not his concept of the ideal job. Years later he remembered that he was on active duty for 3 years, 4 months, 17 days, 9 hours and 22 minutes.
After leaving the military, he worked as a reporter for the Dayton Daily News and The Wall Street Journal Chicago bureau. When that job ended, he searched the ads and found an opening at the Twin Falls Times-News in 1959. It was there that he learned to appreciate Idaho’s mountains and wildflowers, which he frequently photographed. He also began skiing, a sport he enjoyed as recently as last winter.
Mr. Bartlett left the Twin Falls newspaper for San Francisco and law school at Hastings. While in law school, he also worked as a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, where he covered environmental issues.
He returned to Idaho in 1985, working as an attorney in Twin Falls, Wendell and Hailey before his retirement.
Mr. Bartlett is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Ann Bartlett of St. Petersburg, Fla.; his nephew, Lee Bartlett of Oxford, Ohio; his nieces, Kathy Peterson of Apex, N.C., and Beth Bartlett and Amy Pope, both of St. Petersburg; and 9 grandnieces and grandnephews. At his request, there will be no services.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Wrexham Foundation, Aka Manuscript Society, c/o Mary Miller, Ph.D., Dean of Yale, P.O. Box 208241, New Haven, CT 06520-8241.

For over 140 years Americans have recognized the last Monday in May to honor and remember our fallen. Over the years, though, all too many choose to recognize Memorial Day “weekend” as the “kick-off” of summer and a three day weekend of backyard barbecues or boating. They don’t seem to remember or care about the true meaning of the day. Nor do they seem to realize that it is the sacrifices of the American Soldier that allows them to have and enjoy their luxuries during their 3 day weekend.
However, I am proud of this community and Hailey residents for how over the last 6 years we’ve been able to find balance between enjoying our weekend of barbecues and time with friends, and still making the time on Memorial Day itself to properly remember and honor our fallen. This year will be no different. The Hailey Memorial Day Ceremony will take place Monday May 31, 2010 at the Hailey Cemetery at 11:00am. The theme this year is; “Lest We Forget…Military Families Also Serve.” All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Rain or Shine!
As in years passed, there will be speeches, readings, musical selections, a wreath bearing, flag raising, rifle detail, ‘Taps,’ and more. There will also be a flyover at 11:45am of the cemetery consisting of 4 F-15 Fighter Jets. Military participants will be in attendance representing 4 of the 5 service branches. This truly will be a fitting and honorable tribute to Hailey’s and Idaho’s veterans.
On Friday May 28, 2010 a small group of decorators will be at the Hailey Cemetery placing 415 American Flags. 366 of those will decorate known veteran’s laid to rest at the cemetery, and 49 more placed in a section we call “Idaho’s Fallen Heroes,” and they represent all Idahoan’s who’ve paid the ultimate price for freedom since 9/11. The Hailey Cemetery has so many known veterans laid to rest that it puts us in the top 5 of Idaho cemeteries. If you get the opportunity to drive through the cemetery over the weekend you’ll see a patriotic but solemn sight with the sea of red, white, and blue American Flags. I urge you, to please stop by a grave marked with an American Flag, and say ‘thank you.’ If you see a grave marked with a flag, that is undecorated, consider purchasing a red carnation or poppy to place upon the stone….let us remember them all.
Please note, that if you would like to see this event continue for years to come, tax deductible donations can be made to: Hailey Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony Fund, mail to: Hailey Cemetery, c/o Teddie Daley, PO Box 4515, Hailey, ID 83333. For more information about the ceremony or the fund, please call Maggie Springer at 788-0139.
I am honored to have the opportunity to organize the ceremony for the 7th year in a row. I look forward to seeing members of this great community in attendance on Monday. May we all continue to remember those who have served, those who are serving, and those who’ve paid the ultimate price for our great country.
