Welcome to Winter 2012!!!! Yes we were blessed with 3-5 feet of snow. Powder-what a beautiful thing! It is amazing what it can do to a ski town. Everyone in town is STOKED! Yeah yeah…I know we have to shovel it, dig out our cars. Yes it does get tiring on day 4-5 but all is forgotten when you click in Enjoy this edit from skiing with friends at Sun Valley at the start of the storm. Some vids of local, Lexi duPont
With most ski areas having a paltry amount of snow, Taos is offering free skiing to pass-holders from Vail and other ski resorts. Their logic is that if these skiers try Taos, they'll spend money on other things and come back in the future. What's the downside to trying that here? Read the full details in an article on MSNBC - Small ski resorts go after big-time competitors. Melissa Arnot is a professional high-altitude mountaineer. At 27, she’s summited all the peaks you’ve heard of, and lots more you haven’t. She came to Sun Valley for the mountains, and stayed for the people. The Mountaineer from Visit Sun Valley on Vimeo. All the best- SVSEF’s Jordan and Jay Fitzgerald recently returned from Meribel, France, where they participated in the British National Children’s Alpine Ski Championships. The Fitzgeralds maintain dual nationality and qualified for the championships after submitting their USSA points to the race organizers. The national championships are limited to 90 boys and 60 girls, in the equivalent of the USSA’s J-3 and J-4 age categories, and consist of Super-G, GS and slalom competitions.
Though Great Britain is not a dominant ski nation at the World Cup level, most of the elite competitors attend race academies in the U.S., Austria, France or Italy. Jay remarked, “The competition was extremely strong, especially in slalom because the British skiers train on indoor snow or artificial slopes all year.”
Despite very poor snow conditions, the championships were held in the same race arena that was used for the women’s alpine events during the 1992 Albertville Olympics....
Winter Two Thousand Heaven~Epic TahoeYeah yeah I know what your thinking when you here the word epic. Everything seems epic these days but, the snow that dumped down on Tahoe last week was as true to epic as it gets! I quit counting after 100 inches and that was around Wed. It was something like a dream the one that you had since you were a kid-where it didn’t stop snowing!!! As we drove to our friends house we traveled through little tunnels of snow where you can’t see street signs let alone houses. Inside the fire was stoked as you couldn’t see out the windows of the house because of 30-40 feet of snow outside. All this snow was in Meyers, CA. What would 600 inches look like up at Kirkwood? Day 1 18 degrees and 38 inches of fresh greeted us our first morning. Yes it was a true blower over head all day . The Patrol at Kirkwood did a great job getting things open so the face shots never stopped.....

A buddy of mine shared this fun little "movie" of his recent trip to the Pioneer Yurt (run by our friends at Sun Valley Trekking). Some nice ski porn and he threw in a triple daffy for old times sake - not bad for a guy a few weeks shy of his 46th.
Great video by Sun Valley Local Greg Martin. This crew did a one lift tour with SV Heli Guide Bozo Cardozo which started at the top of Otto's (10,458ft). They proceeded to explore the skiing off the Lake Creek headwall and ended with a ski to the valley floor and a pick up at highway. The one lift tour is a great way to get some time in the heli and get a ski tour to some hard to reach locations. One Lift Tour from Greg Martin on Vimeo.
