The moment Becca Hemingway pitched her brain-child “Battle of the Blades: Ice… It’s Hard!” to the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club’s Board of directors, everybody thought we had a winner. When creative geniuses Gia Guddat and Lisa-Marie Allen signed on to work together as Co-Artistic Directors, and veteran ice show skater and producer Nick Maricich agreed to be Production Manager, everybody knew we had a winner. Once the ball started rolling, there was no stopping it. Trina Peters joined Becca as Co- Chair, nine talented professional skaters offered to donate their time to choreograph programs and teach contestants (some of whom could count the number of times they had put on skates before on one hand), and nine of the most fun, fearless, and well-loved “local celebrities” in the valley agreed to be the contestants. Soon, members of the Sun Valley Ice Show Ensemble cast jumped on board, and, to everyone’s delight, popular Sun Valley Ice Show star “Spin Doctor” Craig Heath and breathtaking Pairs team Elena Leonova... One hundred and eighty five junior competitive figure skaters from 41 figure skating clubs across the nation and overseas arrived in Sun Valley for the 44th Annual Sun Valley Summer Figure Skating Championships July 21-24 . Fifty two collegiate skaters joined them for the U.S. National Collegiate Championships, held simultaneously on Sun Valley's two famous ice sheets. With coaches, parents, siblings, and friends in tow, the two competitions drew an estimated 700-800 people to Sun Valley for a high energy weekend of competitive free skating, compulsory, ice dancing, and artistic events. Competitive theatrical and show skating events wrapped up the weekend with what has come to be known as "Showcase Sunday."  True to tradition, costume-clad theatrical skaters duked it out for trophies before a crowd of delighted spectators gathered on the lodge terrace and the bleachers.

On Saturday, April 30 TH, at 4 PM, the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club will take to the ballroom floor on ice with an exciting interpretation of “Dancing with the Stars”, one of the most popular shows on TV.  With their quest to win the Mirror Ball Trophy, our skating stars will work the rink with a vibrant energy you won’t want to miss.  Our evening theme is dancing through time, where our skating stars will take you down memory lane through the roaring 20’s, to the throwback of the 50’s, to the Disco beat of the 70’s.  And you will certainly be completely star struck with a live performance of our Lady Gaga look-a-likes.

And be prepared!  Rumors have been circulating across America of an un-invited “critter” who has been sneaking past security, appearing out of nowhere, leaping onto the ice, and trying to debut a ‘Free Dance’ of his very own.

This high-energy performance is under the direction of our very talented and creative parent volunteer, Michelle Gentling, and the beautiful ensemble... (more)

Competitive figure skater, Nicole Pratt, became a US Figure Skating Gold Medalist in Moves In the Field at a test session conducted at the recent Idaho Winter Games in Sun Valley. This achievement is the culmination of 10 years of year-round weekly training. It marks a progression through eight different progressively challenging test levels where the quality of edges, balance, speed, power, presentation and overall skating are evaluated by a panel of judges certified by the US Figure Skating Association. The Senior Level Test is the highest level USFS Moves In the Field test available to figure skaters. With this honor, Nicole becomes one of an elite group of less than ten Sun Valley skaters to pass a Gold Moves Test in the last six years. Pratt is a 14 year old a freshman at Wood River High School.

Nicole began skating 10 years ago in Sun Valley Figure Skating Club's "Skate-With Us" group classes for beginning skaters. She fell in love with skating and began taking lessons from Coach Darlin Baker. Baker, a... (more)

Lisa-Marie Allen was another Sun Valley area resident who participated in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics along with previously profiled Judy Blumberg (also a figure skater). The 1980 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating team was referred to by some as the "Dream Team". Yet another connection to Sun Valley is Linda Fratianne who was also a member of that Dream Team.

What Olympics did you participate in and in what event(s)

----1980 Lake Placid, Ladies Figure Skating, 5th place

Have you been back to the host city? If so, what was that like for you (memories, experiences, etc.)?

-I've been back 3 times, once as a motivational speaker and twice for reunions. All three return visits to Lake Placid have been extremely fun and educational, as 1979 and 1980 were a fantastic, almost surreal time in my life. I didn't really get to see the town and meet the wonderful community on the first two trips.

Have you stayed involved in the Olympic movement? If so, in what ways?

With the financial and commercial success of the Los Angeles Games... (more)

Judy Blumberg is a Ketchum resident and figure skating coach. In addition, two of her pairs teams competed in the Vancouver Olympics last week. Mark Ladwig & Amanda Evora and Caydee Denney & Jeremy Barrett. She has been a consulting coach to both pairs teams. Blumberg answers questions about her Olympic experience below.

What Olympics did you participate in and in what event(s)?

1980 Lake Placid & 1984 Sarajevo in Figure Skating Ice Dancing

Have you been back to the host city? If so, what was that like for you (memories, experiences, etc.)?

I have been back to Lake Placid for several years running for Figure Skating events. It's still the small town it was and still the small shops that were there in 1980. I will always remember that arena which hosted the most memorable Olympic event for Americans -- The Miracle on Ice. It's heartwarming to see that they have tried to rebuild Sarajevo after the war. People were incredibly warm in 1984. I would really like to go back to revisit the country. I have... (more)
