This winter, the Environmental Resource Center is offering SAS! (Science After School!) to Bellevue and Hemingway Elementary and our new program, WASS (Winter Adventure Science School), to the Wood River Middle School.

SAS! and WASS are FREE eight-week programs that allow students opportunities beyond the school day to participate in project-based learning, within the context of natural science, the environment, and sustainability issues. Program instructors are mindful of the BCSD curriculum standards for the grade levels, and work to incorporate these, as appropriate, into the curriculum.  Students explore science through games, art, journaling, observation, exploration, service learning, and scientific research, and with an 8:1 student teacher ratio, participants engage in more meaningful teamwork and are given more individual attention.  The ERC provide snacks, journals, and other program supplies for each student to ensure that finances are not an obstacle in... As part of the Students Come First legislation passed last year in Idaho, the Blaine County School District will be conducting parent and student surveys of teachers. As per Idaho Code 33-514 (4) which states:

There shall be a minimum of one (1) written evaluation in each of the annual contract years of employment, the first portion of which shall be completed before February 1 of each year, and shall include input from parents and guardians of students as a factor.

The Blaine County School District will be surveying parents in advance of the February 1st deadline, in order to be in compliance with the new legislation. These surveys will be conducted in both electronic and paper formats.

Any student survey data currently being collected is non-evaluative, and is for the sole purpose of teacher reflection. Look for surveys at your parent/teacher conferences or contact the principal for more information.

State Superintendent Tom Luna visited Wood River Middle School and Woodside Elementary last week. Why? Superintendent Luna and his wife Cindy were at the Wicked Spud in Hailey earlier this year. WRMS teacher Jill Clark recognized him and introduced herself, inviting Superintendent Luna to visit her class. At the same time, Woodside Elementary PTA officers were having a meeting at the Wicked Spud and also introduced themselves. They too invited him to visit their school. So, last week he visited both WRMS and Woodside.

At WRMS, Superintendent Luna and his wife Cindy joined Jill Clark’s 7th grade Earth Science students as they learned how to use microscopes. Superintendent Barber, BCSD Board of Trustees Chair Steve Guthrie, and WRMS Principal Fritz Peters joined the fun, each of them working with students on their assignment. Superintendent Luna also visited the 7th grade Leadership Class.

At Woodside Elementary, Superintendent Luna was on the receiving end of an impromptu performance from...

Wood River Middle School students met acclaimed author Lois Lowry earlier this month. Author of The Giver and other books, Lowry spoke to the entire WRMS student body and held a book signing for students prior to the reading. The event was sponsored by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. How are Language Arts teachers using Lowry’s books in their classrooms?

Lowry’s books are widely read among teens and pre-teens. The Giver is on the required reading list for 7th grade at WRMS. Among others, Language Arts teachers Scott Chaffin and Donna McKelvey are using Lowry’s presentation as inspiration for several Language Arts projects.

8th grade Language Arts teacher Scott Chaffin says, “ I use The Giver at the beginning of the year to review concepts such as variations to plot , conflict, setting, etc. With regard to variations of plot, The Giver does not have a resolution. So, I show the students how this looks on a non-traditional plot diagram. I then show them other variations to the plot diagram....

Residents and staff of the Country Side Orphanage in Ghana said thank you to Wood River High School graduate Kelsey Brennan via You Tube.

“Thank you Kelsey, we love you!” they said. Brennan organized a fundraiser at Sun Valley Ballet School, benefitting the orphanage. “I put together an overnight dance party for the younger ballet students. I taught African dance movements and we performed for the parents the next morning,” she said. In one night she raised over $800.00. “I wanted to educate young people here about my experience in Ghana. I went there through AFS when I was 16. I knew I wanted to raise money for the orphanage, so I decided to combine that passion with my passion for teaching dance.”

Brennan credits her mentor, Sun Valley Ballet School Director Sherry Horton, with helping her. When asked how her Senior Project benefited her and shaped her interests in college she says, “My senior project will always be something that influenced my life. Blaine County School District Superintendent Dr. Lonnie Barber delivered the annual keynote address to over 500 staff members this week. This is the only time when every staff member comes together at the beginning of the school year to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the District. After acknowledging employees for their years of service, introducing new staff members, and highlighting the accomplishments of each school, Barber spoke about the importance of the teaching profession.

He emphasized that each of the students in Blaine County School District has a success story and that teachers and staff are responsible for student success. “The work that you do, the most difficult work of anyone, is also the most important work that anyone does,” stated Barber. “Who else gets the opportunity to inspire, lead and shape the future for our children? The Blaine County School District School Board will meet on Tuesday, August 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the District Office at 118 W. Bullion in Hailey.

WRHS educators Liz Lowry and Renee Peters will receive an accolade from the School Board at this meeting. A WRHS parent wrote , “I will not go into details, other than to let you know that for a variety of reasons my son struggled mightily with his academic work. There was a time in his sophomore year that I was absolutely convinced that he would not finish high school. At some point in his junior year, my son let me know that he would stay in school and finish because Mrs. Lowry convinced him that he could graduate and that it was the right thing to do. In my experience, the Individual Education Program kept my son in school and showed him he could succeed.”

This letter was paraphrased with the author’s permission. For a full reading of the letter about Liz Lowry, Renee Peters and the value of the Individual Education Program, attend next week’s board meeting.... (more)
